Learn How to Support Students Experiencing Homelessness and their Families

Students who are homeless have educational rights under the McKinney-Vento Act, a federal law that provides funding to support district programs that serve children and youth experiencing homelessness.

The McKinney-Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Assistance Act is a federal law that ensures immediate enrollment and educational stability for children experiencing homelessness. McKinney-Vento provides federal funding to states for the purpose of supporting district programs that serve unhoused students.

This training is geared towards case managers working with students experiencing homelessness – both new case managers as well as experienced providers who have questions and would like additional support in navigating McKinney-Vento resources & funding.

We'll cover a variety of topics including:

• How the US Department of Education defines homelessness
• What it means for a student experiencing homelessness to attend their 'school of origin'
• Details about school districts responsibilty to provide transportation to students

Providers will have the opportunity discuss case scenarios with experts and learn about resources outside the educational system that can support the students and families they work with.
